REMINDER -- next week last class

A reminder that last week will indeed be the last class.

Be prepared to spend 25-30 minutes for each presentation (that will allow everyone equal/ample time and afford us a break).

I stopped by the CPS office tonight to pick up evaluation sheets and they said that they might be online now (?) I'll find out.

FINAL PROJECT specs

1. Project spec/brief
2. Detailed project description including project workflow/timetable -- if you secured funds (for final class)
3. Visual mock-ups of your concept (photoshop, flash, handdrawn, powerpoint slides, videos) (for final class)
4. (personal) statement -- akin to artist's statement, author's statement, "About the President of company x" A to Q: "Why are you doing this?"(for final class)
5. In class presentation (moderate and field comments, direct discussion)(for final class)

Final Project Idea

My final project idea is to create a video podcast which deals with the commercial shipping industry. Using shiptracker.com and a vessels IMO tracking number, we will locate where a vessel is in the world currently, display that information on the screen and conduct a small interview via Skype or perhaps a short E-mail correspondance. I believe this would be entertaining and enriching to people's lives because it would give them a glimpse into a world that they do not encounter and it would also be an effective way to use multimedia to show the complexitites of the shipping industry.

Final Project Idea - Jerry

My final project idea is a new product for cyclists: GPS Goggles.
The product will combine GPS, bluetooth, cellphone and video technologies integrated into a two part product; the processing/receiving dock that is mounted to the bicycle and a pair of goggles that acts as a viewing screen for the user.  The dock and the goggles are connected via bluetooth technology.
The product will allow the user to take advantage of GPS technology in the same way that most drivers can now but will  place the viewing screen (via the goggles) in the users point of view - so they do not need to take their eyes off the road to view map directions.  In addition to live tracking of position using GPS technology the goggles will allow the user to record 'favorite rides' using a small mounted video camera that will allow users to record positioning data and visual data that the user can then upload at a later date to share with other riders.
In addition the product will take advantage of existing GPS product technology that currently allows users to record time, distance, and speed information about each ride.
Other possible upgrades include web browsing if the phone can be connected to wireless or cellular networks or connect via bluetooth to other devices for sharing of data/routes.

Final Project Ideas

My idea for a final convergence project is a type of multimedia online learning environment that would bring together video, blogging, games, and a database structure. The target audience for this would be students in grades K-12 looking for ways to help themselves better understand various topics in their coursework. It would be a site broken down into grade levels and subject areas with online video tutorials, games and quizzes, and a chat or blog section where students can ask questions about what they're learning. There would be learning objectives for each grade level and students could view the tutorials and test themselves with games and quizzes until they master the subject matter being presented. They would have user accounts where they could track their progress. This information could be shared with parents and teachers, or kept for the student's own use. If the state of Massachusetts were to fund such a program, they could have materials online that would teach students everything they need to know to pass state achievement tests.

Assignment for 08/10/09

I'm still coming down from the high of our Doritos Late Nite concert experience!

So for next week, your assignment:

1) Post your media of your "moment" to either flickr, blip or YouTube. If you want to post elsewhere, email me to check first.

2) Read up on Creative Commons when posting your content (we looked at how to do that in both blip and flickr)

3) Think of a new concept for media convergence that you will pitch as part of your final project. I'm now leaning towards individual projects based on our numbers and limited in class time remaining.

Give Each Student a Kindle

I think this is a great idea. Transferring textbooks from paper to a device such as the Kindle is an inevitable outcome that schools will have to face in the future. We should embrace this concept and move forward to integrate this into every school in America.

Jerry - Assignment #1

I will be talking about gmaps-pedometer website.

Annie DeVane-The Intro

INTRO
Hello all,
I'm a designer and sketchy blogger who obsessively doodles, sketches, and cross-hatches. My blog is http://chunkstyle.blogspot.com/ and I've had it for over 4 years now.
I'm super interested in designing for mobile devices, but also am still loving the world of web design and traditional media (tv, radio, books). Things like Netflix streaming content are rocking my world right now. Good stuff.
With this class, I want to continue my quest to gain a holistic view of the media system and find meaningful ways to contribute to it.
CURRENT CONVERGENCE I THINK IS AWESOME
I've already mentioned it, but the Netflix streaming content is one of the best innovations to hit on-demand media since it began with cable and the TiVo. It does away with not only commercials, but also waiting for the hard-copy in the mail and location boundaries. I can be on my front porch with my laptop, watching high-quality streaming movies and television shows without any hard-copy or subscription limitations (I subscribe at a level that allows unlimited). I barely watch dvds anymore, but I still love tv for some reason.

insidecrm.com Power to the people and the Government

http://www.insidecrm.com/features/new-media-government-092908/

Social media tools are having an ever growing impact on public servants in governement and how they reach out to their constituents. Web 2.0 has empowered people to be more responsive and this is a great benefit for politicians and other public figures.

Power.com

I found this article in the technology section of the New York Times.

Power.com integrates social networking sites into one main Web site. It is an excellent way to help end users keep track of all their social networking responsibilities. Facebook is refusing to participate and is suing.
